Eight years ago the Global City Innovative College (GCIC) was founded by a group of dynamic individuals. Starting with 500 students in their first year and concentrating mostly on their Nursing program, now GCIC is a full-pledged college that offers a total of 8 programs to date, including Business (major in Marketing, Finance, and HR), Education (major in Early Childhood, Secondary Education, English or SPED), Caregiving, Nursing, Information Technology, Tourism, Hospitality Management, and Culinary Arts.

The heat is on as the 12 finalists for SM Hypermarket’s Super Chef challenge go head to head in the four final rapid-fire final rounds that will determine who will be hailed as the SM Hypermarket Super Chef.

Initially, 60 participants, composed of housewives, culinary students and instructors, call center agents, kitchen crew members, restaurant owners, bankers, and retirees had faced off in live cooking challenges. The 12 participants who beat out their competitors time and again are now under even more pressure as the pool of participants becomes ever smaller. To make the competition more intense, the challenges will be televised over the Asian Food Channel.

Instead of being cowed by the awesome challenge of cooking competitively while being watched by television audiences all throughout Asia, the SM Hypermarket finalists are confident in their culinary skills and can’t wait to prove themselves to be the best of the best.

From the Northern SM Hypermarket branches, we have Eddieson de Ocampo, Reynilo Peña, Aiza Mesina and Dante Cabalona.

For people who visit, live or work in Makati, surroundings are often taken for granted in the everyday rush. The event, “Makati through the Lens”, provided amateur and professional photographers a chance to capture that picture-perfect shot of the city.

“Makati through the Lens” is the first major public photo contest focusing on the Makati Central Business District spearheaded by Ayala Land Inc. (ALI). In cooperation with Alveo Land Corp, The Lerato, Pinoy Photography Organization (PPO), Canon, and Philippine Star, ALI hosted an on-the-spot photo contest at the Ayala Triangle Gardens open to kids, teens, and adults.

Ayala Triangle Gardens provides the perfect venue for the photography competition, as it integrates the corporate lifestyle with refreshing green surroundings. The Gardens promote a sense of balance within the country’s premier business district by offering generous breathing spaces and a venue for shared experiences. Photographers will surely find inspiration to capture beautiful scenery and moments in this environment.

Aside from the on-the-spot photo contest, more serious photography club members had the chance to start snapping shots a week ahead, and  submitted entries  on three categories: Lifestyle, Business and Architecture/Skyline.

Activities for the day  included free photography talks by renowned photographers John Chua and Edwin Martinez, and an introduction to Lomography by Francis Inton. Photographers were given opportunities to take shots of several mimes and animals at the Gardens, including Cuckatoo birds, a pot belly pig, Sulcatta Tortoise and Angora rabbit.

Another contest that took place is the “My Makati Memories”, for the best personal vintage photos of Makati. The public was invited to submit original photos of Makati such as those taken at Makati Commercial Center and Quad (now Ayala Center), Ugarte Field (now Ayala Triangle), or even Nielson Airfield, etc. The day was capped by the awards ceremony and entertainment including fire dancers and drummers.

As part of the Independence Day activities this June, the photo contests aim to remind today’s urbanites of Makati business district’s rich history. Entries from “My Makati Memories” showcasing Makati then, alongside winning entries from the photo contest highlighting Makati now are showcased at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, providing a nice visual feature on the evolution of the city.

This event is part of the “I he(art) Makati. I heart the Philippines. I heart being free.” series this June which celebrates the Filipino and Philippine arts and culture at Ayala Triangle Gardens. The series kicked off with the recent unveiling of the Philippines’ first living flag at the Gardens. The 150-square meter living flag features more than four thousand flowering plants such as Marigolds, Plumbagos, Bouganvillas, and Santan.

Coinciding with the living flag display, artworks inspired by the theme “Everyday Filipino Heroes” and “Looking for Juan” have been installed at the Sedeño and Legazpi pedestrian underpasses, which lead to Ayala Triangle from Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas. The first underpass art gallery in the city, the exhibit aims to bring art closer to people.

If you are a woman, take heed. This female serial-killer is out there, waiting to strike. All around the world, it has killed millions of women already- and it will likely kill the millions more who remain unaware that they could be the next target of this fatal female disease known as cervical cancer.

According to the Department of Health, cervical cancer is considered the second most common female cancer in the Phillippines today. An estimated 7,277 new case are reported every year- a number that is said to inaccurately represent the whole population, considering that the surveys to determine the estimate were conducted only in Rizal, Cebu, and Davao. In any case, more than half of this number will die because of this disease within 5 years. Simply because women are uneducated on how to protect themselves from the disease.

An occurrence where the normal cells of the cervix turn cancerous, cervical cancer is usually caused by a chronic and persistent cancer-causing type of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection that leads to pre-malignant lesions that progress to cancer. Because the condition may take ten to thirty years to happen, there is a large window of opportunity to screen , detect, and diagnose the lesions before it gets malignant. Visual inspection of the cervix with Acetic Acid (VIA) and pap smear help identify these lesions.

But more than detection, prevention is also possible using a relevant and effective vaccine that specifically targets the cause of cervical cancer, which is HPV- particularly types 16 and 18.

The clock is ticking. Ask your doctor today about the vaccine. With regular screening, cervical cancer vaccination and a healthy lifestyle, women can save themselves from cervical cancer before it’s too late.
