A decade later, Chikka has served over 68 million people who had registered on-line and via mobile to enjoy the way Chikka had united on-line Filipinos with the sea of SMS users. The company is also releasing the latest version of its Chikka Text Messenger.

The new version combines the cool convenience of sending an IM message when one is on-line with the personal warmth, immediacy even urgency of receiving a message as text, instantly read on ones phone.

Promoting even higher utility for the community, the new Chikka version features P1.00 replies during off-peak hours when a lot of Global Filipinos are driving message traffic to friends and loved ones mobiles in the Philippines. Unlimited text packages akin to popular UNLI packages being offered by Philippine telcos are also now available all day.

It is also interoperable with Google Talk while Chikka is working on partnering with other instant messaging applications to make it easier for users to keep in touch. They are also developing applications that will be supported by the i Phone, Blackberry and other android phones.

According to CIO Dennis Mendiola, “The idea is for Chikka users to be able to access it on numerous communications platforms. Simply put, as long as you have a computer or mobile phone, you can use Chikka.”

The new version will be out in August 25, 2010.

Times are always changing. What is relevant a decade ago might not be true today, and what is considered important right now might not be in ten years down the line. Globalization has taken over the world, and borders between countries have blurred. The continuing challenge of keeping up with the trends and demands of the modern economy is a task for educational institutions, those that provide training for the future workforce of the world.

Eight years ago the Global City Innovative College (GCIC) was founded by a group of dynamic individuals. Starting with 500 students in their first year and concentrating mostly on their Nursing program, now GCIC is a full-pledged college that offers a total of 8 programs to date, including Business (major in Marketing, Finance, and HR), Education (major in Early Childhood, Secondary Education, English or SPED), Caregiving, Nursing, Information Technology, Tourism, Hospitality Management, and Culinary Arts.

The Nursing program curriculum is specifically designed to prepare students for the local Board of Nursing Examinations, and foreign exams like the NCLEX, CGFNS, TOEFL and TSE for global competency. The Commission of Higher Education has currently ranked GCIC as the 9th Top Nursing Schools in the National Capital Region. The Professional Business Studies allows students to do their business internship in the US, Australia, China, and Singapore as part of their Global Business Entrepreneurial Immersion Program. Local internships may also be be done in partnership with top corporations and multinational companies in the country.

This 2010, GCIC will be introducing two new programs in their curriculum, Tourism and Information Technology.

The innovative Culinary Arts program was first offered in 2009, and it features a diploma to degree system. After taking the 8-month diploma course, the students have the option to proceed to the HRM program to eventually earn a bachelor’s degree. The International Hospitality Management program of GCIC includes the Hospitality Management and Tourism courses. In 2008, the Commission on Higher Education granted GCIC the authority to the Bachelor degree course.

The Diploma for Culinary Arts program combines several methods of teaching including hands-on, classroom sessions, field trips, career development seminars and chef mentoring among others. The subjects include classical cooking, international cuisine, Asian cuisine, baking and pastry, and the more practical side like restaurant and catering business, safety and sanitation, cost control, nutrition, and event management.

Students also benefit from mentoring with renowned chefs such as Rolando Laudico and Sau del Rosario. The students also intern at the chef’s restaurants Bistro Filipino and Chelsea, respectively; other restaurants include M Cafe and Guava, and hotels like Discovery Suites and Shangri-La Makati.

The College of International Hospitality Management’s newest program, the Bachelor in Tourism provides a comprehensive course that exposes students to various areas in the tourism industry such as travel, hotel, transportation, leisure, resort and destination management.

The current worldwide high demand for skilled workers in the hospitality industry has prompted a lot of schools nationwide to enhance their curriculums. GCIC’s programs are competitive, all to provide students with a global outlook and strong industry exposure. “Life skills add a different yet relevant flavor to the seemingly common program offering,” says JB Bolaños, head of Marketing of GCIC. “Most culinary schools highlight their facilities, faculty profile, curriculum and methods of teaching, partnerships, and career pathways as their program strengths. At GCIC, we have these but, moreover, we believe that the purpose of education is not just simply to learn to earn a living, but to live.”

Together with strong business and liberal arts foundation, students are provided with comprehensive language instruction. The ever increasing world tourism statistics is an indication of how big the market is. Equipped with sound education and solid training foundations, GCIC students are more than ready to take on the world after leaving school.

All programs have carefully selected faculty based on the value of their industry exposure, leadership, communication efficacy supported by their academic achievements and psychological preparation to teach.

The facilities available at GCIC are state-of-the-art, such as the Mini-Hospital, where nursing students are able to practice their skills in a simulated hospital environment. GCIC also has fully-equipped laboratories such as the Chemistry Lab, Computer Center, and Instrumentation Lab.

GCIC has the flexibility of adapting to the changing needs of the times balanced with the good solid foundation of the old. Engr. Michael Tan, president of GCIC, said “We want our students to be successful not only in their professional life. We don’t just teach our students Competency but build positive Character as well.” Global City Innovative College is what schools of the future are made of. Anticipating the needs of the society, GCIC is preparing students not only for the immediate demands, but for the long-term needs as well.

The location of GCIC at the heart of Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City is very ideal – close to commercial establishments such as Market! Market! and Bonifacio High Street, and the entire Fort Bonifacio business district as well. Together with top restaurants, medical institutions such as St. Luke’s Hospital, and the upcoming Shangri-La Hotel, the location of GCIC plays an integral role in the whole educational experience. Students enjoy a safe, secure, clean and uncongested environment with GCIC.

About GCIC:

Global City Innovative College (GCIC) is a private college situated at the heart of Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. It began in 2002 when a group of entrepreneurs joined together to establish the first collegiate education center in what was then the Fort Bonifacio Special Economic Zone.
The heat is on as the 12 finalists for SM Hypermarket’s Super Chef challenge go head to head in the four final rapid-fire final rounds that will determine who will be hailed as the SM Hypermarket Super Chef.

Initially, 60 participants, composed of housewives, culinary students and instructors, call center agents, kitchen crew members, restaurant owners, bankers, and retirees had faced off in live cooking challenges. The 12 participants who beat out their competitors time and again are now under even more pressure as the pool of participants becomes ever smaller. To make the competition more intense, the challenges will be televised over the Asian Food Channel.

Instead of being cowed by the awesome challenge of cooking competitively while being watched by television audiences all throughout Asia, the SM Hypermarket finalists are confident in their culinary skills and can’t wait to prove themselves to be the best of the best.

From the Northern SM Hypermarket branches, we have Eddieson de Ocampo, Reynilo Peña, Aiza Mesina and Dante Cabalona.

From the Southern division of branches are Islagel Gellidon, Leah Alava, Angelo Cervantes, and Louie Dumangas. Completing the roster for the Super Chef battle are the four chefs from the Central District branches, namely Mark Anthony Mejino, Eric Dizon, Josephine Portulin, and Roselle Manzano.

For these twelve finalists and for the television audience watching with bated breath, the battle to become a star of Filipino cuisine is on!
For people who visit, live or work in Makati, surroundings are often taken for granted in the everyday rush. The event, “Makati through the Lens”, provided amateur and professional photographers a chance to capture that picture-perfect shot of the city.

“Makati through the Lens” is the first major public photo contest focusing on the Makati Central Business District spearheaded by Ayala Land Inc. (ALI). In cooperation with Alveo Land Corp, The Lerato, Pinoy Photography Organization (PPO), Canon, and Philippine Star, ALI hosted an on-the-spot photo contest at the Ayala Triangle Gardens open to kids, teens, and adults.

Ayala Triangle Gardens provides the perfect venue for the photography competition, as it integrates the corporate lifestyle with refreshing green surroundings. The Gardens promote a sense of balance within the country’s premier business district by offering generous breathing spaces and a venue for shared experiences. Photographers will surely find inspiration to capture beautiful scenery and moments in this environment.

Aside from the on-the-spot photo contest, more serious photography club members had the chance to start snapping shots a week ahead, and submitted entries on three categories: Lifestyle, Business and Architecture/Skyline.

Activities for the day included free photography talks by renowned photographers John Chua and Edwin Martinez, and an introduction to Lomography by Francis Inton. Photographers were given opportunities to take shots of several mimes and animals at the Gardens, including Cuckatoo birds, a pot belly pig, Sulcatta Tortoise and Angora rabbit.

Another contest that took place is the “My Makati Memories”, for the best personal vintage photos of Makati. The public was invited to submit original photos of Makati such as those taken at Makati Commercial Center and Quad (now Ayala Center), Ugarte Field (now Ayala Triangle), or even Nielson Airfield, etc. The day was capped by the awards ceremony and entertainment including fire dancers and drummers.

As part of the Independence Day activities this June, the photo contests aim to remind today’s urbanites of Makati business district’s rich history.
This event is part of the “I he(art) Makati. I heart the Philippines.
If you are a woman, take heed. This female serial-killer is out there, waiting to strike. All around the world, it has killed millions of women already- and it will likely kill the millions more who remain unaware that they could be the next target of this fatal female disease known as cervical cancer.

According to the Department of Health, cervical cancer is considered the second most common female cancer in the Phillippines today. An estimated 7,277 new case are reported every year- a number that is said to inaccurately represent the whole population, considering that the surveys to determine the estimate were conducted only in Rizal, Cebu, and Davao. In any case, more than half of this number will die because of this disease within 5 years. Simply because women are uneducated on how to protect themselves from the disease.

An occurrence where the normal cells of the cervix turn cancerous, cervical cancer is usually caused by a chronic and persistent cancer-causing type of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection that leads to pre-malignant lesions that progress to cancer. Because the condition may take ten to thirty years to happen, there is a large window of opportunity to screen , detect, and diagnose the lesions before it gets malignant. Visual inspection of the cervix with Acetic Acid (VIA) and pap smear help identify these lesions.

But more than detection, prevention is also possible using a relevant and effective vaccine that specifically targets the cause of cervical cancer, which is HPV- particularly types 16 and 18.

The clock is ticking. Ask your doctor today about the vaccine. With regular screening, cervical cancer vaccination and a healthy lifestyle, women can save themselves from cervical cancer before it’s too late.

This is a public service announcement on cervical cancer. I was recently invited to attend a forum discussion on cervical cancer and the treatments/ vaccines available today.
